Is Thudakkam Worth Watching on JioHotstar?
If you are scrolling through JioHotstar looking for something to watch this week, Thudakkam is an easy title to notice. The Malayalam action thriller stars Vismaya Mohanlal in her first acting role and follows a young woman whose ordinary life changes after she becomes the target of a dangerous man.
The film originally opened in theatres on August 7, 2026, and started streaming on JioHotstar on September 18. It is available in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.
But the more useful question is simple: Is Thudakkam actually worth watching at home?
For me, the answer depends on what you expect from it. If you want a straightforward thriller with a strong female lead and physical action, there is enough here to make the movie worth your time. If you expect a tightly written crime thriller where every character and plot point makes perfect sense, you may find yourself getting frustrated.
What Is Thudakkam About?
The story follows Meenu, a young woman living with her father in a hill village in Kerala. She has trained in martial arts and has a fairly ordinary life until a seemingly small incident puts her in danger.
After helping two schoolgirls get home safely, Meenu attracts the attention of a dangerous man. What begins as an uncomfortable encounter gradually turns into a much more serious threat.
The important thing is that Thudakkam is not simply a revenge movie. A large part of the story is about what happens to Meenu after she becomes vulnerable, how people around her react, and how she tries to regain control of her own life.
That makes the premise more relatable than the usual “hero discovers a villain and beats him” action formula. Imagine a situation where someone you barely know starts following you, your family becomes worried, and even reporting the problem does not immediately make you feel safe. The fear comes from not knowing what the person will do next.
That everyday feeling is where Thudakkam has some of its strongest moments.
Vismaya Mohanlal Is the Main Reason to Watch
The film carries a lot of curiosity because this is Vismaya Mohanlal’s acting debut. She is the daughter of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, so there was naturally going to be extra attention on her first major screen appearance.
The good news is that the movie gives her enough room to establish Meenu as her own character rather than simply using her famous surname.
Several reviews have particularly noted her action work. India Today described her debut as confident, while Cinema Express also highlighted the performances of Vismaya and Aashish Joe Antony, particularly during the stunt sequences.
Her action scenes are important because the movie has to convince us that Meenu’s martial arts background is more than something mentioned in the dialogue.
And this is where watching the film at home can actually work quite well.
You do not need a huge cinema screen to understand what the movie is trying to do. The tension comes more from watching Meenu deal with a threat that keeps getting closer. When the action finally arrives, it feels connected to the character rather than being inserted simply because the film needs a fight scene.
The Villain Could Have Been Better Written
This is probably the biggest weakness.
Aashish Joe Antony plays the antagonist, a dangerous criminal who becomes obsessed with Meenu. His physical presence works, and some reviews have praised his performance. But the character itself does not always feel as fully developed as it could have been.
That matters because a thriller depends heavily on its antagonist.
Think about the difference between being afraid of a real person and being afraid of a movie villain. A believable villain usually has patterns, motives and limitations. You understand why people are scared of him, but you can also understand how he operates.
Thudakkam sometimes asks you to accept things simply because the story needs them to happen.
The Indian Express review made a similar criticism, pointing to problems with the film’s writing and the logic surrounding the antagonist and the investigation.
If you are the kind of viewer who immediately starts asking, “Why didn’t the police check this?” or “How did nobody notice that?”, some scenes may take you out of the movie.
Where Thudakkam Works Best
The strongest part of Thudakkam is its central idea: a young woman should not have to become a completely different person just because someone else decides to threaten her.
Meenu already has martial arts training, but the film does not present her as an unstoppable superhero from the beginning. She has family responsibilities, personal problems and moments of fear.
That makes the action more grounded.
It is also one reason the movie may work better for someone watching at home after a normal day of work than for someone expecting a big theatrical action spectacle.
You can settle in, follow Meenu’s situation and let the tension build.
The movie is also relatively easy to follow if you are not familiar with Malayalam cinema. JioHotstar’s release includes Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada versions in addition to Malayalam.
So you do not need to approach it as a “Malayalam movie homework assignment.”
What About Mohanlal’s Cameo?
Yes, Mohanlal appears in the film.
His presence is obviously going to attract attention because of his connection to Vismaya, but it is better not to watch the movie expecting a traditional Mohanlal-led action film. This is Meenu’s story.
Some reviewers felt that the cameo works as a memorable moment, while others thought its presentation leaned too much toward fan service.
In other words, if you are opening JioHotstar mainly because you want to see Mohanlal, keep your expectations in check.
If you are watching because you want to see how Vismaya handles her first leading role, the cameo is more of an extra.
Is Thudakkam Worth Watching on JioHotstar?
Yes, if you enjoy female-led action thrillers and don’t mind some uneven writing.
Thudakkam is not a perfect thriller. The story follows a fairly predictable path, and some supporting characters and plot developments could have been given more depth. Both the Indian Express and Koimoi reviews raised concerns about the screenplay and the film’s tendency to focus heavily on its central message.
But that does not make it a pointless watch.
The film gives Vismaya Mohanlal a substantial debut, has a clear central conflict, and delivers the kind of survival-driven action that many OTT viewers are looking for.
If you have two hours and 17 minutes free and want something more serious than a comedy but not as demanding as a complicated crime mystery, Thudakkam is a reasonable JioHotstar pick. The CBFC lists the certified film at about 139 minutes, while current streaming-review listings give the runtime as 137 minutes.
Watch it if:
- You like female-led action movies.
- You want to discover a new Malayalam film.
- You are interested in Vismaya Mohanlal’s debut.
- You prefer straightforward thrillers over complicated mysteries.
- You want something you can watch in one evening.
You may want to skip it if:
- Plot logic is extremely important to you.
- You expect a highly unpredictable thriller.
- You are mainly watching for Mohanlal.
- You dislike movies that put a strong social message at the centre of the story.
Bottom line: Thudakkam is not the kind of movie that will completely reinvent the thriller genre. Its writing has noticeable weaknesses, but the central performance and action give it enough personality to make it a worthwhile JioHotstar watch—especially if you go in knowing that it is a straightforward, message-driven survival thriller rather than a tightly constructed mystery.
